Celebrate Liberation Day Rotterdam!
At Liberation Day on 5 May the Dutch celebrate the end of the Second World War. This is a special day for Rotterdam, because the city had been nearly completely destructed. Nowadays, the Dutch Liberation Day is more about freedom in general instead of just focusing on WWII. One of the main events in Rotterdam on Liberation Day is the Liberation Festival where famous artists perform, but you can also visit attractions, museums and shops in Rotterdam as they all welcome you on Liberation Day! The Rotterdam Fun Fair is open on Liberation Day too.
Shopping i Rotterdam at Liberation Day
Most shops in Rotterdam downtown, the Zuiplein Mall and the Alexandrium Mall are open on 5 May. The Rotterdam store hours on Liberation Day are equivalent to a Sunday opening, ie the shops are open from noon till 5 pm.
Liberation Festival Rotterdam
The Liberation Festival in Rotterdam (Liberation Festival Zuid Holland) is held at the Park facing the Euromast and it's absolutely free. In the afternoon the Mayor of Rotterdam officially opens the Liberation Festival by lighting up the freedom fire with a torch, which is brought by a number of runners who run from Wageningen to Rotterdam. The Liberation Festival Rotterdam has big names lined up. In 2013 Miss Montreal and rapper Dio and will perform on the main stage.Liberation Day activities for kids
The smaller stage offers a special kids program in the afternoon with lots of music, dancers, comedians. At Vrijheidsplein (Liberty Square) kids can join a tinker workshop with 'scrap' and get to know real war veterans. To get a touch of culture a large photo exhibition shows pictures of the liberation of Rotterdam in 1945. -

The Festival is held within the Scheepvaartkwartier (Martime Quarter) in the large park near the Euromast. From Rotterdam Central Station, get there by metro and stop at Dijkzigt or Leuvehaven. As an alternative, get there by tram line 7, stop Willemsplein. Plan your trip at www.9292.nl. It's free of charge. To travel by public transport in Rotterdam you must purchase a travel chip card first.Parking at the Liberation Festival Rotterdam
You can park in the Erasmus Public Parking or in the surrounding streets, but you'll have to pay to park in Rotterdam city centre until 11 pm by chipcard or credit card. Very nice. Is there a museum or is there a web page with photographs of Liberation Day, 1945? My dad was there: 1st Canadian Division.
