Toren op Zuid Rotterdam

The Toren op Zuid (or South Tower in English) is also known as the KPN building, because it serves as the regional headquarters for telecom company KPN. The tower is located at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge on the Southbank, where many modern architecture to be found. The building was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano who also designed the Centre Georges Pompidou located in Paris.
Crooked building
The modern ‘Toren op Zuid’ fits perfectly with the skyline of Rotterdam and can be found on many postcards together with the Erasmus Bridge and the New Luxor Theatre. The building is a real eye catcher as it’s crooked. With a slope of 6 degrees the building is almost as crooked as the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. At the front of the building a steel pole of 50 meters ensures that the building remains in balance.Enormous billboard
The best of the Toren op Zuid is that the front of the building is used as an enormous billboard of 90 by 40 meters. Nearly 1000 green lights ensure that all kinds of images can be displayed on the building. The images are often adapted to the seasons and the events in the city, but are also used for artistic expressions. For example, you can see a huge Christmas tree during the Christmas holidays on the billboard. Especially in the evening when the green lights light up in the dark the building is very beautiful! -
