Museum Rotterdam describes the history of Rotterdam and its inhabitants. You can learn everything about rich history of the city and learn how Rotterdam grew into a metropolis. The collection of the museum can be found at two different locations in Rotterdam: the Schielandshuis in the city centre and the Dubbelde Palmboom in the district historic Delfshaven.

Schielandshuis Rotterdam
The Schielandshuis is the only 17th century building in the center of Rotterdam that survived the Blitz during the 2nd World War. It was built between 1662 and 1665 and was visited by the French emperor Napoleon in 1811. A few years later Alexander 1 from Russia visited the Schielandhuis but refused to stay in the same room where Napoleon had stayed. In the Schielandshuis you cen see a big very collection of historical objects but also models of the city before and just after the Blitz during the second World War. You can see how the city would have looked like without this destroying Blitz.

Dubbelde Palmboom Rotterdam
The Dubbelde Palmboom in Delfshaven is an historic warehouse built in 1824 to store grain. About 30 years later the warehouse was transformed into a distillery and in the 20th century into a furniture factory. Currently the warehouse is used to show the history of merchants, dockworkers and citizens of Rotterdam. You can see how Rotterdam evolved during the centuries and watch the interior of old shops and houses in Rotterdam. You can also visit the exhibition about the famous Dutch naval officer and folk hero Piet Hein. Hein captured the Spanish treasure fleet loaded with silver during the Eighty Years’War between Spain and Holland. There are some great interactive exhibitions about time and waste for kids in the museum as well.
