  • Shipyard De Delft in Rotterdam

    At historical shipyard De Delft people are working on the reconstruction of the 18th century ship in the Delft class. 'De Delft' will become one of the largest ship replica's in the world!

    Sunk in 1797
    The original ship was built in Delfshaven in 1783 and was used to escort and protect convoys of merchant-ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the European waters. The 60 guns ship sank in 1797 during the important Battle of Camperdown with the British. This battle was means the definitive end of the Netherlands as a major naval power. Pieces of the shipwreck were found in 1977 just outside the coast close to Scheveningen.

    Ship reconstruction
    In 2001 the reconstuction of the ship replica began and today people are still working on it at the shipwarf. You can visit the shipyard and see the ship grow to her final glorious overall length of 63 meters and height of 57 meters!

    Guided tour
    In the museum there's an exhibition where you can learn about the building of the ship, the history, life at sea, Battle at Camperdown and much more. You can see even some artifacts which taken out of the original ship wreck by a diving club. Or you could enjoy a movie about De Delft, but it only shows in Dutch! During the 45 minutes tour a guide will tell you everyting that you want to know about the historic ship like the history of the ship and the reconstruction project. The tour guides will show you the various workshops where parts of the ship are crafted.

    After your visit to the ship you can visit the gift shop where you can buy some nice souvenirs like compasses, binoculars, decorative knots-boards and books. Or you could have a break and enjoy a drink or snack in the restaurant which offers a magnificent view at the river Maas and the workshops at the yard.

    Shipyard De Delft is located at Schiehaven 15 close to Delfshaven and the Euromast. Get there by taking the metro to Coolhaven or tram 8 to Oostkousdijk.

    If you come by car you can park your car in the streets, but you will have to pay!
