The Boompjes promenade is a trail along the river where you can really feel the typical Rotterdam atmosphere throughout the seasons. On a sunny day, you can see the sunset over the harbour cranes; it leaves a red glow on the impressive skyline. The most centrally located promenade is between the Erasmus Bridge and Willemsbrug, and is called ‘Boompjeskade’. This quay offers a wonderful view of Noordereiland, the isle in the river Maas. The grey concrete steps on the quays contribute to the industrial harbour atmosphere, but it's actually a missed opportunity that the quayside is so sober!

Relax along the river
For that purpose, three kilometers of riverside wall along the elegant Erasmus Bridge will be radically redesigned, starting in 2010. The northern Maas river bank will be transformed into a green promenade that will be a green oasis where you can quietly enjoy the waterfront. There will also be a trail along the ‘Boompjes' where you can walk, cycle or skate. Instead of concrete stairs, shortly there will be trees and plants with wide grass strips and plenty of benches for enjoying the view. The parking spaces along the water will disappear. During 2011, Rotterdam’s project of the green waterfront will be ready.

The brand new promenade will be located from ‘Parkkade’, ‘Westerkade’, ‘Willemskade’ and ‘Leuvehoofd’ until the end of Boompjes, roughly from the tunnel under the river Maas to Willemsbrug.

Leuvehoofd park
Leuvehoofd (the quay facing the Erasmus bridge) has so far turned into a temporary beach in summer, but during other seasons this area has been really empty and deserted. The stone surface will therefore be replaced by a small park. The existing trees are supplemented by various lawns or plants. Also in Leuvehoofd park there will be enough benches to enjoy the sun or to admire war memorial ‘The Bow’ (45 meters height!). The Bow commemorates the 3500 sailors who lost their lives on board of Dutch merchant ships in World War II.
