  • Metro Rotterdam

The Rotterdam Metro is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Rotterdam and neighbouring cities like Schiedam, Hoogvliet, Poortugaal, Pernis, Rhoon, Spijkenisse and Capelle aan den IJssel. The Metro trains run very frequently and are ideal to cover large distances within minutes and without having to bother about traffic jams.

The Rotterdam metro, which was was the first metro system to open in the Netherlands, consists of two lines. The first line called Erasmusline (or Blue line) runs from Central Station to Zuidplein and onwards to Rhoon, Poortugaal, Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse. Within a few years this line will be connected to the lightrail, which runs to the Hague. The second line called Caland ine (or Red line) runs from the east of Rotterdam through city center to the west of Rotterdam and onwards to Schiedam, Pernis, Hoogvliet and Spijkenisse. In the northeast of Rotterdam this line splits into three sublines: one to Ommoord, one to Nesselande and one to Capelle aan den IJssel. The Erasmus Line intersects with the Caland Line at Beurs station, the only underground interchange between the two metrolines.

The main metro stations in Rotterdam center are Central station, Stadhuis, Beurs, Eendrachtsplein and Blaak. When you get out at one of these stations you are in the middle of all the liveliness of city center. You can use the metro to visit all tourist attractions and sights of Rotterdam: there's always a metro stop nearby!

You can only pay for the metro with a OV chipkaart which you can buy at the sales offices of Rotterdam's transport company RET. With this OV chipkaart you pay for the distance you travel but you can also buy a special OV chipkaart like a one, two or three days OV chipkaart. More information can be found at the OV chipkaart page.

The metro runs from early in the morning (around 05:30 hrs) till late in the evening (around 00:30 hrs) but doesn't run at night.
