  • Train to Rotterdam

Rotterdam is very well connected to the Netherlands railroad system and has several international connections. The main station in Rotterdam is central station in the middle of city centre. International trains and high-speed trains, like the Thalys from Brussels and Paris, call at this station. From the central station you can get anywhere in Rotterdam by changing to other trains, trams, buses, lightrail, metro or by taking a taxi.

There are several other trainstations in Rotterdam, most of them on the North-South lines from Amsterdam to Antwerp, a few others on the East-West line from Utrecht. Not all trains call at each of the stations, so you have to check the information at the station to see where the train stops. The station Feyenoord Stadion is only open for events in the Feyenoord stadium.

    Connections
There are fast InterCity trains connecting Rotterdam to other main towns and cities in the Netherlands, while slower stopping trains halt at nearly every station. The fastest city-centre-to-city-center journeys to Rotterdam are:

Amsterdam 35 minutes Paris (France) 2 hours and 28 minutes
Schiphol Airport 20 minutes London (UK) 3 hours and 8 minutes
The Hague 18 minutes Dusseldorf (Germany) 2 hours and 33 minutes
Utrecht 39 minutes Cologne (Germany) 2 hours and 55 minutes
Antwerp (Belgium) 32 minutes Berlin (Germany) 6 hours and 40 minutes
Brussel (Belgium) 58 minutes Barcelona (Spain) 6 hours and 40 minutes

There are also hourly night services connecting Rotterdam Central Station to Delft, The Hague, Amsterdam, Gouda and Utrecht at Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

    Tickets

Tickets can be bought from machines at the stations. The machines accept debit- and credit cards and cash. Bigger stations do have sales offices as well but you will be charged a small fee for using the sales offices instead of the machines. It is not possible to make reservations for a seat on a Dutch domestic train and there are no supplements. The trains have mostly second class and just a few first class sections. The 2nd class is good but usually very crowded during rush hour and you might not have a seat!

International train tickets can be bought from the sales office in central station or ordered at the website of the Dutch Railways. If you want to take the high-speed train Thalys you need to have a reserved seat. You can get the reserved seat by contacting the Thalys sales office at the Central Station or by ordering it at the website of the Dutch Railways.
