Delft

Description

The city of Delft is located in the south of the Netherlands between Rotterdam and The Hague, and is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque towns in Holland. Its meandering canals network through the historical center creating a magical and verdant setting for its historical buildings, evidence of a rich cultural past.

Historical sites

Although Delft is best known for its exquisite Delftware (the typical Delft Blue pottery) and the House of the Dutch royal family, there are many other historical sites of great interest to visit within the inner city walls.

The Legermuseum (Military Museum) leads visitors through Dutch military history dating from the Prehistoric Age to Modern Times. Here you may find examples of weapons, vehicles, paintings and scale models represented in their historic context. This site holds a fascinating aura of past conquests.

Prinsenhof Museum

For a close up look at William of Orange's life, head for the Het Prinsenhof Museum (Princes Court). This was once a monastery and is where the Prince took up residence and led the revolt against the Spanish. There is also evidence of bullet holes that witness his murder by the Spanish partisan, Gerards. Here you will also find a wonderful collection of 17th century art and other remnants of the war against the Spanish.

Johannes Vermeer

Delft is the birthplace of the renowned Dutch Golden Age painter, Johannes Vermeer who lived and worked in the city all his life. Examples of his world famous paintings can be admired at the Vermeer Center, located in the historical site of Saint Lucas.

Old Church

The Old church is also of great historical interest, for it is the burial site of Delft's greatest painter as well as famous naval heros including Marteen Tromp and Piet Hein. This is the oldest church in Delft, erected in 1240 and boasts beautiful stained glass windows and sculpted interior. The church tower holds a curious particuliarity for it leans to one side.

Delft Blue antiques

Of course, a visit to Delft would not be complete without a tour at the Royal Delft. This museum and factory offers a facinating collection of ceramics from the last century as well as a huge collection of Delft blue antiques. You may also get a chance to watch the artists at work and of course you will be able to buy some souvernirs!
